What is the Skilled Worker Visa?

The Skilled Worker Visa (formerly Tier 2 General) allows overseas nationals to come to the UK to do an eligible job with an approved employer. This is the most widely used work visa route in the UK.

Eligibility Requirements

  • A job offer from a UKVI-licensed sponsor (employer)
  • The role must appear on the eligible occupations list (RQF Level 3 or above)
  • Meet the minimum salary threshold (generally £38,700 per year from 2024)
  • English language proficiency at B1 level or above
  • Sufficient personal savings (if not confirmed by your sponsor)
  • Tuberculosis (TB) test result if required for your country of residence

Application Process

Frequently Asked Questions

You are typically granted permission to stay for up to 5 years (depending on your CoS). You can extend your visa and, after 5 years of lawful residence, apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).
