What is the Spouse Visa?

The UK Spouse Visa (also known as the Partner Visa) allows the husband, wife or civil partner of a UK citizen or settled person to come to the UK to live together. The visa is initially granted for 2.5 years and can be extended.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Your sponsor must be a British citizen, have ILR, or be a recognised refugee
  • The relationship must be genuine and subsisting (marriage certificate or civil partnership document required)
  • Financial requirement: sponsor must earn at least £29,000 per year (2024 threshold)
  • Suitable accommodation must be available in the UK
  • Applicant must meet the English language requirement (A1 level minimum)
  • Both parties must be aged 18 or over
